Another July celebrant is Susan Roces, the wife of the late Fernando Poe Jr. and the former movie queen of the Philippine cinema together with Amalia Fuentes.

Susan Roces was given a surprise early birthday party by some close friends last Thursday, July 19, on the set of John En Shirley where the beloved veteran actress is one of the mainstays.
Entertainment columnist Ricky Lo, in his column today in the Philippine STAR, gave the readers a glimpse of the celebration that happened nine days before Susan's actual birthday on July 28.

Friends who visited Susan included Regal Entertainment top honcho Mother Lily Monteverde, Armida Siguion-Reyna, Makati City Mayor Jejomar Binay with daughter and Makati Congresswoman Abby, Marichu "Manay Ichu" Maceda, Susan's manager Dolor Gueverra, Ethel Ramos, Kitchie Benedicto, Senator Chiz Escudero and his pregnant wife Tintin.

John En Shirley's episode which will be shown this coming Saturday, July 28, was really intended as a special birthday tribute to Susan, although from the very start she was entirely clueless about how everything would go .

Special guest Martin Nievera performed four numbers: "Ikaw," "If," "Kahit Isang Saglit," and "Somewhere." Ricky reported that the celebrant held back tears during the rendition of "Somewhere" as it definitely reminded her of her late husband Fernando Poe Jr. It was the couple's theme song.

Susan was heard saying, "I don't want to cry," her voice cracking a bit while listening to the song.

Piolo Pascual and fellow hunk Sam Milby performed a duet of "She" and Billy Joel's "Just The Way You Are," which got Susan cheering and clapping for more.

Eighty years old na pala ang King of Comedy.


Ito ang balita mula sa Philstar stungkol sa celebration ng kaniyang birthday.

Rodolfo Quizon — Dolphy to the world — is turning 80 today. Actually, he’s only 79 but, being part-Chinese (it’s obvious in his features, especially his eyes, isn’t it?), he follows the Chinese computation which includes the nine months you are in the womb. Which means you are one year old at birth.

But Dolphy won’t be celebrating until Saturday, July 28 (which is the 66th birthday of his John En Shirley sitcom co-star Susan Roces and, I repeat, The STAR’s 21st anniversary), when his beloved Zsa Zsa Padilla hosts a Roaring ’20s party for him at the Villa Immaculada in Intramuros, Manila.

Together for 19 years, the couple has weathered all kinds of storms and survived the worst kind of tsismis which is the recurrent one about their having parted ways and putting up appearances by living under one roof but sleeping on separate beds.

“Yes, it’s true,” confirmed Zsa Zsa when Funfare dropped by last Sunday at Tamayo’s Flower Shop and Catering Service & Restaurant, near the venue of the July 28 affair, where Zsa Zsa and Dolphy had a food-tasting. “Yes,” repeated Zsa Zsa with a wide smile, “we slept on separate beds when I came back from Melbourne two weeks ago because I had the flu and I didn’t want to infect him. Dolphy can’t sleep without having the aircon on and I was feeling cold, so I asked him to sleep in another room. But our separation didn’t last long because we missed each other. Now, we’re back to sleeping on the same bed.”

Don’t misinterpret Zsa Zsa’s trip to Melbourne as a ploy to evade the rumors.

“I went there to enroll Nicole at the university. She’s taking up an arts course.”

The couple could also only laugh at the rumor linking Zsa Zsa to Tito Sotto.

“I haven’t seen him for years,” exclaimed Zsa Zsa. “The last time I saw Tito was at the hospital where FPJ was confined. Are we bothered by rumors like that? No, we are not, not at this stage of our life.”

Asked why she chose the Roaring ’20s as motif, Zsa Zsa simply explained, “Because Dolphy was born on July 25, 1928.”

The 500-plus guests invited will partake of the following menu, the same one Zsa Zsa and Dolphy went out of their way to taste (“Ayaw namin mapahiya sa mga guests, ‘no,” said Zsa Zsa):

.Appetizer: Chicken Galantina, Fisherman’s Dream, Garlic Mushroom, and Lumpiang Shanghai;

.Soup: Crab & Corn Soup Chinese Style;

.Salad: Salad Bar, Poached Baby Prawns in Asian Vegetable Garden, and Peppered Beef Tenderloin;

.Main Entree: Stuffed Beef Tenderloin St. Sylvester on a port wine, Hawaiian Pork Spareribs, Sauteed Shrimps in hot chili sauce, Tri Color Pasta with Arabiata sauce, and Steamed Rice;

.Desserts: Fresh Fruits in Season, Mango Sago, and Leche Flan; and

.Drinks: Iced Tea, Softdrinks with Diet Coke, and Coffee & Tea.

Funfare put Dolphy on the “hot seat” before he and Zsa Zsa did the food-tasting.

What is the most painful thing that happened to you?

“Well, aside from the death of my parents, mas painful lalo ang death ng anak ko. There are so many painful moments but I’m thankful to God that I survived them.”

And what’s the most joyful thing that happened to you?

(Zsa Zsa butting in: Siyempre, noong kabataan niya at marami siyang chicks. Joyful ‘yon, di ba? At every time nagkakaroon siya ng anak.)

“Well, ‘yung pagsikat ko was very joyful ‘yon.”

What’s the biggest mistake that you have committed and how do you plan to correct it?

(Laughs) “‘Yung pag-aasawa ko ng marami. It shouldn’t have been. (Actually, despite his many relationships, Dolphy has never been married, but he and Zsa Zsa are hoping — against hope? — to march down the aisle in due time. — RFL) Dapat isa lang, di ba? I don’t know why it happened. But now I have only one.” (Stealing a glance at Zsa Zsa beside him) “May pruweba naman, di ba?”

If you could turn back the hands of time, what would you change in your life?

“None. My career is okay, everything is okay. I’m forever thankful for all the blessings He has given me. I can’t ask God for anything more. I’ve been in showbiz for 63 years; I started in 1944, during the Japanese time, and I’m still around. Napagdaanan ko na lahat — vaudeville, stage show, radio, television, movies...lahat! Kami ang unang Japayuki, Bayani (Casimiro) and I. We performed in Japan in 1951.”

Which of those periods was the most difficult?

“The Japanese time. We had to do shows even if there were bombings all around. We ate only twice a day, mostly camote by day and porridge at night.”

You haven’t changed. Despite your stature, you have your feet firmly planted on the ground. You have remained so humble and down-to-earth. (I must add that Dolphy and Zsa Zsa are among the very few superstars easy to interview; they don’t give the press the run-around. One call and everything is set. No wonder they are so loved and respected.)

“It has to be that way. I guess I am just lucky. I’ve been telling my children, ‘Maybe when God showered His blessings, mas marami akong nasahod kaysa ibang tao.’ I never let anything go to my head. That’s why I said that I wouldn’t change anything in my life.”

What’s the best thing that ever happened to you?

(Again glancing at Zsa Zsa). “She’s one of the best things that ever happened to me. When I met her, nag-slow down talaga ako. I’ve stopped going out. I’d rather stay home now.”

You joked before that Zsa Zsa is your Viagra.

“A, oo! Very effective!”

You’ve been invited to join politics but you always said no.

“They ‘ve been asking me, ‘Bakit di ka tumakbo?’ And I would tell them, ‘Ayoko ‘kako.’ They would say, ‘Bakit ayaw mo, eh, sigurado ka naman mananalo.’ And I would say, ‘’Yon nga ang ikinatatakot ko, baka manalo ako.’ Those were my exact words. I remember that you were the one I told that to several years ago during our interview in Anabel’s Restaurant.”

Do you believe in reincarnation?

“Yes, I do. If you are a Catholic, I think you should believe in reincarnation. Sarado Catholic ako so I believe.”

If ever, how do you want to be reincarnated?

“Sana ako rin. I’m happy with myself.”

What’s good with being Dolphy?

“Well, masaya. My work is fun; I enjoy what I’m doing. I’m happy making people laugh. If you make people happy, it gives you a nice feeling, di ba?”

If you were not the King of Comedy, what would you have been?

“Siguro, isang yagit. A street child. But you know, from way back, I really loved to travel. Maybe I would be abroad, working as an OFW. I wanted to travel by boat, ‘yung mga cruise, so maybe I would be an entertainer in a luxury liner.”

What is your greatest fear?

“Only one —- ‘yung magiging buhay ng maiiwan ko. I want my loved ones (18 children all in all) to have a good life.”

Any regrets?

“None. No regrets at all.”

Any birthday wish?

“Not for myself but for my loved ones — for them to have good health and, again, a good life...away from danger; malayo sa mga sakuna.”

How do you want to be remembered?

“I want people to remember me with a smile on their faces. Maski nasa kabilang buhay ka na, maganda ‘yung naaalaala ka ng tao na may ngiti sila sa mukha, instead of them crying. Pag sinabing Dolphy, mapapangiti sila.”

GMA-7's senior vice president for entertainment, Wilma Galvante, didn't wait for the weekend to pass as she voiced out her disappointment with Angel Locsin's definite transfer to rival network ABS-CBN.

Speaking to Showbiz Central hosts Pia Guanio and Raymond Gutierrez by telephone, the usually calm Galvante sounded very upset, saying that she and GMA-7 as an organization was shocked and saddened by this recent development.

"We nurtured her... we made her the star that she is," Galvante lamented.

Angel started her career with GMA-7 and was molded over the past five years as one of the network's prized talents. Angel's partnership with GMA-7 had worked wonders for both parties as evidenced by all the success they reaped while working together.

He's 20 or 21 years old."



That was Aga's same age nang kumakayod na siya bilang artista.



"Yeah, dumapa na ako noon," sabi niya. "Naghirap na ako't lahat. Dinanaanan ko na lahat 'yan. Sabi ko [kay Igi Boy], ‘If you want it that way, believe me, 'yan ang mangyayari sa ‘yo sa ginagawa mo na ‘yan. But there's nothing wrong.' Sabi ko, ‘In life, you are given all the choices. You want to be a bum, you can. But that's your life.' Choice mo ‘yan, e. [Kung] bum ka, bum ka. Kung maging mayaman, magsipag ka, ganun lang 'yan. Pero huwag ka lang magpapahirap sa ibang tao, di ba?"

"Ginagawa niya ‘yan because doon lang siya makakapasok. Hindi siya makakapasok sa eskuwela sa regular school, because, I think... I don't want to embarrass my son. I can't talk about it. But, you know, he took it up two years ago.

"Ngayon, 'yan ulit. Kasi nga, hindi siya naka-enroll ngayong pasukan. So, dun lang siya makakapasok. E, hindi naman siya regular school, so nakakapasok siya dun. Still, of course, as a father, okay. But really, believe me, magsisisi ka sa huli. But okay lang 'yan because kung gusto mong dumapa nang plakda, dadapa ka nang plakda, and then you'll learn it the hard way."

Claudine Barretto has given birth to her first child with husband Raymart Santiago, Rodrigo Santino Barretto Santiago, at 7:44 a.m. this morning, July 19, in Medical City.

Claudine had a normal delivery. Santino weighed 6.9 lbs.

The couple also has an adopted daughter, Sabina.

Santino's birth is the best gift for Claudine and Raymart on their birthday tomorrow, July 20. Claudine turns 28 years old while Raymart turns 34.

"You know what? What goes around comes around. I really believe in that. Wow, what an effort to compose a letter and e-mail it to everybody? Spread this letter around, all these lies, amazing!

"At this point in time, I should be trembling kung anuman ang mangyayari sa kanya dahil ang Diyos ay hindi natutulog!

"Kami, we never speak-ill of other people para makaisa lang kami. Step on other people’s toes. That’s evil! Kasamaan ‘yon.

"Siguro tinitira siya dahil sa tatag ng pamilya namin.

"Sino ba ‘yon? He’ll probably tell me later. Lahat, pasa-Diyos na lang. Kung ano ang ginawa mong masama, babalik sa ‘yo. Kung hindi sa kanya, baka sa pinakamamahal mo!

"Basta kami, we live honest lives. We work hard for a living. Kung puwede nga lang mag-lechon dito sa La Mesa Grille ang asawa ko, ‘no?" mahabang paliwanag pa ng megastar.

Ngayong nabiyayaan ang mga hirap nilang mag-asawa nu’ng nakaraang eleksyon, ang showbiz career naman niya ang kanyang haharapin.

"Abonado kami sa eleksiyon, kaya sa restaurant kami ngayon kumikita at pati na sa trabaho ko sa showbiz.

"Uunahin ko muna ‘yung commitment ko sa Star Cinema and then, ‘yung sa GMA Films with Robin (Padilla).

O ayan ha, nagsalita siya. Sana hindi patapos, kagaya ni Ruffa na iiyak-iyak pa.
Hindi na raw niya mahal ang asawa niya dahil niloko siya ng limang taon.

Sabi niya:

"Pagdating ko galing sa States, I arrived June 18, I found out that Joey hasn't been sleeping in the house for five months. Although he has given me many reasons to doubt him—like nawawala na lang siya, hindi nagpapaalam, malalaman ko na lang na nasa Cebu—but still my strong faith in him and my trust, was the one that made me believe him and what he said. Sabi niya nag-golf siya, kung ano-ano ang mga reason niya," Nena narrated.

She continued: "Sinabi niya, ‘I gave up the woman sometime ago. She is now in New York with her husband and this is just a fling.' Sabi ko, ‘Fling? Bakit kailangan umabot sa ganito na malaman ko pa? Why did you disregard my feelings? When you love a person, you will do everything in your power to keep anything that you know would hurt the person.'

"The fact that he was so brave and blatant about this affair, made me believe that maybe he doesn't really care about me. He doesn't give this marriage any importance.

"I have been loyal to him and I have been faithful to him for twenty-eight years. Nobody can come up and claim that I have been disloyal and unfaithful to him, so why should I expect something else from him. Why should I not expect the same thing from him? Talagang I was shocked. I was in pain. I had mental anguish.

"Every Sunday nagsisimba kami, nangungumunyon siya. I had no inkling that five years na pala ang kanilang illicit affair. Alam mo sa labas ideal family. Pero totoo ang kasabihan, ‘The wife is always the last to know.' Andami na palang nakakaalam pero ako pala ang [huli]."

"According to some people, nagka-anak si Joey na three years old. Hindi ko na sasabihin ang pangalan. Sabi ni Joey sa akin before I came here, ‘Be careful of what you say.' I said, ‘Yong rumor na iyon, you admitted na it was a rumor that has been going on [for some time], so why did you not correct it?' If somebody is being accused of being a father and it is not true, why didn't you correct it? She added, "He has been evading that issue. As of this moment, I cannot answer whether there is a son out of this illicit affair. It has a legal repercussion. If you don't deny that child, later on when you're dead, he can claim a part of your estate."

"We are beyond speaking terms. Nasa hiwalayan stage na kami... I don't love Joey Stevens anymore. I can truthfully say that the marriage is over... I have already consulted a lawyer and we are weighing all options open to a legal wife who has been wronged," she concluded.

If it is for the better or for worse, only time will tell now that Angelo Locsin is no longer under contract and being managed by GMA 7.

Here's the news from Inquirer.

“Angel is now a freelancer. She doesn’t have any existing (TV) contract with any network.”

That was the terse reaction of Becky Aguila, Angel Locsin’s manager, to Funfare’s banner story yesterday (Will Angel’s wings be clipped?) upon her arrival from L.A. after the premiere in two US cities of Angel’s trilogy starrer Angels which Angel herself stars in and co-produced with Becky.

There are speculations that Angel might sign up with rival network ABS-CBN now that her contract with GMA has expired. Sources at ABS-CBN however said that the network hasn’t made any offer to Angel even if Becky reportedly gave an assurance that Angel is now a freelancer. But first, the sources added, ABS-CBN execs asked Becky to produce a “release paper” before any negotiation could start.

“There’s no need for any ‘release paper’ because Angel’s five-year contract with GMA expired last March 31,” said Becky who called Funfare three hours after she arrived on a PAL flight early yesterday morning.

“I must add that I never said that Angel has an offer from ABS-CBN or any other company.”

Angel’s only existing contract, added Becky, is with Regal Films.

“It’s a movie contract. I still have to meet with Mother Lily before I can say anything about it, though,” said Becky. “I’m not about to reveal what our options are until after I discuss them with Angel’s father.”

Angel was 17 when she was tied down to an exclusive (TV) contract with GMA which made her a big star.

“It was a co-managerial contract,” explained Becky, “with GMA’s Artist Center and I co-managing Angel.”

Starting with the youth-oriented TV show Click, Angel appeared in a few more shows before she was launched as “solo” star in big-budgeted projects like Mulawin, Darna and Asian Treasures; and a few films GMA Films co-produced with Regal Films, including Mulawin The Movie, TXT, I Will Always Love You and The Promise.

Becky said Angel was offered the lead role in Marimar, the new GMA TV series inspired by the popular Mexican telenovela. “But,” explained Becky, “we have to turn it down because Angel was scheduled to take up a crash course in fashion in London. Besides, Angel wanted to have a rest; she has been working and working, and she badly needed a break.” The role landed on Marian Rivera’s lap.

Together with Becky and Angels star Jennylyn Mercado and company, Angel arrived L.A. on July 5 without, contrary to reports, rumored suitor Marvin Agustin (who’s also in the cast of Angels) who arrived the next day for the Angels screening and left on July 10. Only two screenings were held, one in San Francisco and the other in San Diego.

Asked if it’s true that the L.A. screening was scrapped due to poor ticket sales, Becky said, “It was due to poor marketing. But we told ticket-holders in L.A. that they could use their tickets for the San Diego screening.”

No, said Becky, Marvin is neither Angel’s boyfriend nor her suitor.

“And, no, Angel is not pregnant according to rumors. She has been rumored to be pregnant so many times that it doesn’t bother us anymore. Paano siya mabubuntis...sa hangin?”

But she did express appreciation and approval for lawyer Michael Templo, son of Mildred Ortega and Mitch Templo (retired general) and reported to be Angel’s “admirer,” whose office processed the papers (visa and all) Becky, Jennylyn and company. (Angel has a five-year US visa.)

Deadset on putting up a sportswear store before the year ends, Angel is enrolled at the London Fashion School for a two-week course. Classes will begin on July 23.

“This belies rumors that Angel didn’t pass an ‘entrance’ test and that she wasn’t given a visa by the British Embassy,” continued Becky. “Angel is a sports-lover. She’s a good swimmer; she’s involved in other kinds of sports. That’s why she’s putting up a sportswear store; nasa linya niya ang sports. When she comes back (third week of August), Angel will enroll in a Business Entrepreneurship course

in the same correspondence school in Eastwood City where Joyce Jimenez studied.”

Angel's manager 'pressured' over reports on GMA-7 ban

MANILA, Philippines -- Talent manager Becky Aguila was tightlipped over reports that GMA-7 would impose a ban on her talents.

According to reports, GMA-7 issued a memo that it would temporarily not acquire the services of Becky's talents, which includes Angel Locsin and Jennylyn Mercado.

Through a close associate, Becky told INQUIRER.net that she considered the reports as mere "rumors" and said would rather not talk about it. However, the talent manager-film producer claimed she was "feeling the pressure."

There were reports that Becky had begun talks with ABS-CBN for Angel's transfer to the Kapamilya network. Becky also declined to comment.

Becky had met with GMA-7 executives on Wednesday over Angel's no-show in the network's 57th anniversary celebration on the noontime show "SOP" last Sunday. INQUIRER.net also tried to reach GMA-7 entertainment officials but were not available for comment as of this writing. Becky also remained mum on their meeting.

Becky had allegedly told the network Angel could not attend the anniversary celebration because of a "commercial shoot." Curious about Angel's glaring absence, reporters asked a personal assistant (PA) of the young actress the next day why she did not show up. The unnamed PA answered Angel was actually at home and only waited for a phone call from GMA-7.
